How Three Countries Honour National Burger Day

What could be better than a whole day spent in celebration of your favourite food of all time? For us at Hugo Chetcuti’s Burger Bar – that’s definitely burgers! Certain countries in the world have actually marked “food holidays” on the calendar which are all about burgers – have a look at these dates and how they’re celebrated in three different nations, brought to you by Hugo Chetcuti and team.

The United States

America has not just one, but four different national days celebrating burgers! May 28th is National Burger Day, July 28th is Hamburger Day, September 15th is National Double Cheeseburger Day and September 18th is National Cheeseburger Day (because apparently, cheeseburgers are special enough to warrant two separate food holidays). Many burger festivals are held across different states in the country, including Sacramento Burger Battle in California and Burger Fest in Hamburg, New York.

The United Kingdom

National Burger Day in the UK is celebrated on the last Thursday of August. There’s even a website dedicated to the holiday, detailing over a thousand venues in the nation offering discounts on burgers. The site also includes a burger map, an extensive list of specials and even burger-related competitions with attractive prizes. In 2013, one burger outlet even launched a line of burger-flavoured ice-cream!

Australia

This is the land of down under we’re talking about, so it’s no surprise that some pretty bizarre burger recipes have been served up to honour this particular food holiday. The Australians celebrate National Burger Day on 28th May, during which restaurants nationwide try to compete against each other to see which one can come up with the most outrageous offers. A burger joint in Perth once came up with the “Krispy Kreme Doughnut Burger” – a meal every bit as decadent as its name would imply. Two doughnuts serve as the burger buns, with a topping of cheese, fried bacon and a beef patty.

Here in Malta we don’t really need an excuse to celebrate the deliciousness of burgers (though we certainly wouldn’t complain if we had a burger holiday of our own!) Hugo Chetcuti invites you over to his Burger Bar in St. Julian’s any day of the week to feast on some of our divine burger creations. Don’t forget to help yourself to our mouth-watering snacks and sides as well!
