Weird Ice Cream Flavours That Will Give You Serious Brain Freeze

You like octopus, you like ice cream, how bad can they be together? There are a number of ice cream flavours to challenge those annoying friends who think they’re super daring because they tried escargot in Paris once.

Hugo’s Burger Bar has recently introduced Hugo’s ice cream, which can only mean one thing: an ice cream list. Hugo Chetcuti’s team has compiled a list of the weirdest, one-of-a-kind ice cream flavours available around the world that will make your teeth ache, your gums numb and your eyebrows rise.

1. Garlic

Great for keeping those vampires away, we guess? Since its opening in 1998, Max & Mina’s in New York has created over 5,000 unique flavours. Daily flavour experimentations mean that the menu is ever-changing, and has seen flavours in the likes of horseradish, pizza, corn on the cob and jalapeno.

2. Octopus

Despite the multitude of attractions within Tokyo’s indoor amusement park Namja Town, perhaps the one worth spending most of your time is at Ice Cream City. Not your average ice-cream parlour, Ice Cream City offers a plethora of unconventional flavours which include anything from octopus, snake, red bean, and cow tongue. Let’s just say it’s not for everyone.

3. Lobster

This may sound insane, but – well it is. This butter-infused ice cream topped with cooked bits of cooked lobster is a dinner-dessert hybrid we hesitate to call a delicacy. In case you happen to be in Maine, try this one out at Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium.

4. Coconut Curry

The Parlour in Durham, North Carolina offers coconut curry flavoured ice cream. It gets its pastel yellow colour from the curry powder, while the coconut lends this dessert a cooling, tropical essence.  Hugo Chetcuti approved.

5. Kimchi

For those times you’re not sure whether it’s something savoury or a dessert you’re craving, opt for the Kimchi & Rice ice cream at Portland’s Salt and Straw. This Jasmine rice based gelato incorporates ribbons of kimchi – a staple in Korean cuisine made from salted and fermented vegetables), as well as chocolate kimchi truffles.

If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen… and grab an ice cream instead! Try Hugo Chetcuti’s selection of ice cream (is there anything the man can’t do?) that includes pistachio, lemon and strawberry – among other flavours waiting to tickle your taste buds at Hugo’s Burger Bar. And if you happen to be right next door, fret not – they’re also available at Hugo’s Pub!
