Dangerously Tasty Cuisines: Greek Vs. Middle Eastern Meats & Flavours

Hugo Chetcuti isn’t one to rest on his laurels, which is why two new burgers are now available at Hugo’s Burger Bar! With the introduction of the Middle East style lamb burger and the Greek style lamb burger, the chefs at the burger joint have incorporated some of the typical flavours associated with these two types of cuisines.

Let’s take a look at some fundamental characteristics of Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine and see what makes them so distinct!

Flavours & Spices

Greek cooking is very simple and doesn’t rely on a large variety of herbs and spices but the combination of a few. Greek food’s philosophy seems to be bringing out the natural flavour rather than disguise it with spices, which is why it’s neither typically spicy, nor heavily seasoned. Flavourings often used in Greek cuisine are namely oregano, mint, garlic, dill and bay laurel leaves.

On the other hand, spices and herbs feature prominently in most regions in the Middle East and dishes are often strongly flavoured with spices such as cumin, turmeric, caraway and nutmeg.

Meat

Apart from vegetables and breads, one of the main focuses of Greek cooking is on meats. The truth is, lamb is the staple meat for most Greek dishes due to the fact that Greece’s terrain and climate have made the breeding of sheep and goat more extensive than that of cows. In fact, the Greeks have the highest consumption of lamb per-capita in the EU.

Lamb has also always been one of the favoured meats in Middle Eastern countries, particularly during important religious festivities, as well as after a birth, marriage or death. This popular meat is also one thing Hugo Chetcuti’s two new burgers have in common!

Sauce

Tzatziki is a traditional Greek dip made of yogurt mixed with cucumber, garlic and often, mint and is served as a meze or with grilled meats. Enjoy this wonderfully tangy and refreshing sauce served inside Hugo’s mouth-watering Greek style burger!

Apart from the lamb and delicious bread buns, the Greek and Middle East style burgers do have something else in common; both are dangerously tasty!
