Hugo Chetcuti’s Bitesize Burger Facts

Simple yet versatile in its inception, the burger has now been a classic staple in our diet for years. Hugo Chetcuti would like to share with you some amazing facts about burgers that you probably didn’t know.

1. Hungry in Hamburg

It’s from Germany’s second largest city that the term “hamburger” originates. The word “Burg” in German is a collective noun referring to a number of different places, such as “fortified settlement”. When German immigrants arrived in the US in the late 1800’s, they introduced their Hamburg steak recipes to the Americans; a combination of onions and ground meat which was then sandwiched between a patty or bread bun.

They really took off in popularity when sold in 1904 at the St. Louis World’s fair. When the first fast food restaurant opened just 17 years later, hamburgers were sold for only 5 cents!

2. Bonkers for burgers

50 billion burgers are consumed in America alone each year; it’s been estimated that if all these burgers were arranged in a linear fashion they would end up circling Earth over 32 times. It’s no surprise then that the burger is considered to be America’s favourite food, though it’s now also consumed globally in fast food chains and even Michelin starred restaurants. In fact, 60% of sandwiches sold worldwide are actually burgers.

3. Take a bite out of these burger statistics

The largest ever hamburger was created in Minnesota, USA at the Black Bear Casino. They set the record with a diameter of 10 feet, weighing at 913 kg in total. Over 10,000 people came to taste it when it was revealed to the public in 1982. There are now over 50,000 burger joints located across the USA!

The most expensive burger in the world is found at the Las Vegas restaurant ‘Fleur’, which is priced at a hefty $5000. The FleurBurger’s toppings include black truffles, foie gras and Wagyu beef, served on a brioche truffle bun.
